What is it about New Year’s resolutions that make them so hard to keep? We all have great intentions of making a change and we figure there is no better time than the New Year to kick it off. The problem occurs when we somehow fail to keep up with these new resolutions of change. I recently read that the middle of March is the time when most people decide to officially give up and quit on their New Year’s resolutions. Doesn’t this seem all too true for many of us? We get off to a great start in January, struggle a little bit in February, and then finally decide it's time to give up in March.
Many times in my past I have struggled to fulfill resolutions and commitments. I can proudly say that the most notable commitments in my life are still holding strong. I have continued to honor the marital commitments that I made on the day of my wedding. I have repaid (or am in the very long process of repaying) every debt that I have ever taken out. Most importantly, I still hold to the commitment I made to follow Jesus Christ. Like all other commitments in life, a pledge to follow Jesus is not always easy. The ways of the world are tempting and the path of Christ is sometimes hard to keep. Even during the most difficult times, the benefit of holding on to Jesus has made all the difference in the world.
So, maybe you had a few commitments of your own ... kick a bad habit, volunteer in the community, go to church more often, read your bible more, lose some weight and get in better shape, spend more time with your family, floss more often ... the list goes on (and these are just the ones I had). Whatever commitments you made for the new year I hope you're keeping them, but more importantly my hope and prayer is that you are holding on to the commitment to love Christ. If you’ve never made that commitment, I hope that you’ll consider it. My resolution to follow Christ has given me more benefit and fulfillment than any choice I’ve ever made.
Hear these words from Jesus himself as He calls you to a new life.
