When would a young wife and mother have the time to sit down and write a Gospel hymn? Annie Hawks, a number of years ago, sat down and wrote the hymn, I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord.
Her life was filled with many responsibilities and she knew the that the trials, temptations and the tasks that come to us every day would require the presence of the Lord. In her wisdom, she wrote these words:
I need Thee every hour, most gracious Lord;
no tender voice like Thine, can peace afford.
I need Thee every hour, stay Thou nearby;
Temptations lose their power, when Thou art nigh.
I need Thee every hour, in joy or pain;
Come quickly and abide, or life is vain.
I need Thee every hour, teach me thy will;
And thy rich promises in me fulfill.
I need Thee every hour, Most Holy One;
O make me Thine indeed, Thou blessed Son.
I need Thee, O I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee!
O bless me now, my Savior: I come to Thee!
Annie Hawks has much to teach our faith about the presence of the Lord in hours of trial and in moments of when great tasks weigh heavily on our shoulders.
