Elizah Hewitt lived in Philadelphia. She loved the outdoors, and flowers, and nature. When she was a young school teacher she had a terrible accident that left her a lifelong invalid. She was confined to her room. She was denied the beauty of Nature, but through her belief in Jesus Christ she wrote a song that has lived until today.
The words go like this:
There is sunshine in my soul today,
More glorious and bright than glows in any earthly sky,
For Jesus is my light.
There is gladness in my soul today,
And hope and peace and love,
For blessing, which he gives me now,
And joy laid up above.
How could a young school teacher confined to her room, denied the joy of outdoors, write about sunshine in her soul? Because rather than looking at the clouds that darkened her sky, she looked at the face of Jesus. Jesus had become the light in her life. Her life was radiant because of his presence and his joy.
Today, if you are confined, look into the face of Jesus!
