Immediately after World War II the allied armies gathered up many hungry and homeless children and placed them in camps. They were abundantly fed and cared for, but at night the children had trouble sleeping. They were restless and afraid.
A psychologist came up with an idea. After the children were put to bed at night, they were given a piece of bread to hold on to. If they wanted more to eat, it was provided, but this piece of bread was to hold. The result was astounding. The children went to sleep knowing they had something for tomorrow. The assurance of a piece of bread in their hand took away their fear about tomorrow and not having the next meal.
Because of our relationship to God through Jesus Christ, we are assured of strength and provision. In Psalm 23, we read of the promise of God's provision through the eyes of David, who writes, "The Lord is my shepherd; I have everything I need. He lets me rest in green pastures, He leads me to calm water" (Psalm 23:1-2 CEV).
Today, remember that God provides us with daily bread and the protection that only a heavenly Father could give -- our future is assured and our salvation is provided. How can we not give thanks!
