Far too many believers today have fallen for the false idea that the Christian life is easy and simple. The truth is that the Christian life is not to be lived on the playground, but on the battleground. We don't play on the jungle gym, but live in a jungle among mortal enemies of our God. Our foes consist of the Devil and his angels.
The apostle Paul reminded the believers of Ephesus that "We are not fighting against humans. We are fighting against rulers of darkness and powers in the spiritual world." (Ephesians 6:12 CEV)
We are engaged in a cosmic spiritual battle for the soul. We cannot afford to fall for the false ideas that living our Christian life will be fun and games. Rather, we must discipline ourselves with Bible reading, prayer, worship, and Bible memorization, all in an effort to stand firm against our enemy.
As Eugene Peterson put it in The Message, "This is for keeps, a life-or-death fight to the finish against the Devil and his angels."
