Prepared for Y2K?
    by Inspire Women's Audio Magazine

I know, I know, you can’t walk into a bookstore, pick up the newspaper, or turn on the radio without hearing about Y2K. And even though you may be sick of hearing about it, we thought it wouldn’t hurt to cover a couple of basics as we approach the new millennium. So here you go! It’s not an exhaustive list of things to accomplish in these last few days before December 31, nor is it a complex theological dialogue. This is just a little checklist on how to approach this exciting new chapter in the history of our world.

Well, the first thing you want to do is PRAY! What an exciting time for Christians. There seems to be an awakening going on in our society — people who searching and you have the answers. So ask God to direct your conversations and relationships toward him and the hope he provides.

The first thing you want to do is PRAY!
If you are a parent, please don’t forget to talk to your kids about Y2K. With the “savvy-ness” of our youth today, they’re not missing a beat. Depending on how informed you are, you might be able to talk about computer chips and hardwiring glitches, or... maybe your kids can bring you up to speed on this faster than anything else! At our house with the little ones, we’re keeping it pretty simple on the technical stuff, focusing mainly on why we’re freezing water and buying extra canned veggies — the tangibles they can grasp.

Speaking of freezing water, everything we’re reading and hearing from people we trust says one thing: DON’T PANIC! So,... DON’T! Use the brain God so graciously gave you and do some basic prep work like:

  1. Get hard copies of your bank, credit card, and loan statements.
  2. Freeze a couple of extra gallons of water and store start stocking up on bottled water.
  3. Buy some extra canned and dried goods just in case.
  4. Have more than your usual amount of cash on hand. For those who don’t normally have any money in your billfold, this means at least $400-500 dollars.
  5. If you have a fireplace or wood burning stove, don’t forget to get your wood pile ready.
  6. If you have money in your budget to purchase a kerosene heater, go for it! Even if you don’t lose power, they’re not a bad thing to have around if you’re in a place where the winters can get pretty chilly.

Finally, be ready to share. Not only your supplies, but your God. If we do find ourselves in the dark on January 1, our challenge will to be providers of the Light. What a great opportunity! As you’re sharing some food, some heat, or whatever resources your less prepared neighbors and friends might find themselves needing, don’t forget to share the Light of the world.
