Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken> (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 NLT).
Jesus never intended his followers to try to live their life of faith in isolation. He sent his disciples out two-by-two on their mission journeys. He often used inclusive family terms to speak about their life of faith ("our Father," "your brother").
This emphasis on community and family is carried over in the rest of the New Testament as we hear about house churches and our need to be there for each other. The "one another passages" of the New Testament arise out of this background — a recognition that we need each other to walk the Christian talk. We can't do it by ourselves and we were never intended to try to do it by ourselves.
Below, you will find a collection of New Testament passages from various translations that use the phrase "one another" and a few that use the phrase "each other." These are great passages to use in trying to live out the community that Jesus envisions in the Sermon on the Mount. Yet as you try to live these fully, you will also recognize your need to be in close fellowship with a small group of believers who can help you grow, hold you accountable, and encourage you in the Lord. These are shared for your growth, obedience, and commitment to be part of the people of God.
