That statement comes from three facts:
- Jesus told his followers to go into all the world and to be his witnesses to the end of the world (Matt. 28:19-20; Acts 1:8).
- As followers of Jesus today, we are the descendants of 13 guys (the Apostles) who, according to the first century historian, Josephus, "drew to Jesus both many Jews and many of the Gentiles."
- There are over 7.2 billion people alive on the earth and 4.6 billion (2/3) do not know Jesus. It is also estimated that at least 5.5 billion do not personally own a Bible.
From my travels to Spain, Africa, Cuba, England, and across the United States, I have become convinced that people are influenced not by the official clergy (priests, pastors, preachers) but by friends. Friends telling friends about how Jesus and God do active things in their lives. Non-believers do not care about theology discussions or seemingly ridiculous semantic hair splitting. They watch and then listen to people who care about them. We have a lot of telling to do.
Throughout the book of Acts, there are examples of regular people telling their friends about how God sent His Son so that the world might be saved. With 4.6 billion souls still needing to hear that story, we have a lot telling to do.
I believe that each individual Christian has the duty, obligation, responsibility to tell their friends about Jesus. While some, maybe most, will not listen for long, we owe it to them and to Jesus to speak. For we have a lot of telling to do.
Because we have a lot of telling to do!
