I love a good mystery novel, play, or one of those dinner plays where you
try to guess 'who dunnit?' A favorite writer of mine is Agatha Christie,
with plays and tales such as "The Mouse Trap", "10 Little Indians", "The
Mirror Cracked", "What Mrs. McGillicuddy Saw", and "The Body in the
Library". Her books have been sold in 104 languages, though she has been
dead for over twenty years. Over 2 billion copies of her works have been
sold.
In spite of her acclaim, Christie was a shy and humble person. At the
tenth anniversary celebration of her play, "The Mouse Trap", Christie
arrived early and alone. Not knowing who she was, the doorman refused to
let her in. Instead of arguing, she just meekly turned away.
Jesus reminds His disciples that to enter into the Kingdom, you must be
like a child. But he adds in Matthew 18:4 "Whoever then humbles himself as
this child, he is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven."
Humility seems to be missing in our daily culture of self-promotion and the
"look out for Number One" philosophy. Let's be disciples who live and
reflect humility.
