Janet Flanner wrote that Gertrude Stein posed eighty times in 1906 for Picasso's portrait of the famous American writer. After each sitting,
Picasso would wipe the face off, saying he couldn't "see" her anymore. He
finally finished the writer's likeness in Spain, where he couldn't see her
at all. He also said when friends complained that the painting didn't look
like Stein, that "someday Stein would look like the portrait". And, in
fact, she did!!
As we look at our lives, we may recognize that we don't look like Christ very much. But God's Word reminds us that God uses the experiences,
trials, and difficulties of our lives to shape us into His Son's image.
Paul reminds us in Romans 8:28-29 "We know that God causes all things to
work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called
according to His purpose for those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to
become conformed to the image of His Son."
Don't despair. Each day we begin to look more and more like Jesus. Someday when people look at us they will see a beautiful picture of Jesus.
