The Great Awakening, the religious revival movement that deeply affected
America, reached its oratorical peak in 1741 with the famous sermon
delivered by Jonathan Edwards at Endfield, Massachusetts entitled "Sinners
in the Hands of an Angry God". Edwards' message proclaimed man's
"abominable" sinfulness in the eyes of God. Nine years later, Edwards was
forced to resign from the pulpit at Northampton, Massachusetts by members
of his congregation because they opposed his emphasis on the sinful nature
of mankind. This, by historians' account, ended the Great Awakening.
Soneone once said, "the greatest of sins is to recognize no sin". Many
today fail to recognize the seriousness of sin. But God said, "The soul
that sins shall die". In Romans 6:23, He declared, "For the wages of sin
is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our
Lord."
Sin is serious. That was why God sent His Son to pay the penalty of death
for us. Let us never view sin lightly.
