Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. Don't be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil.
— Proverbs 3:5-7 NLT

Key Thought

Too many of us live life "flying by the seat of our pants" — trusting in our own talent/feelings/wisdom without relying on others. When the teaching of Scripture seems too hard to obey or is not known, we try to figure out what to do based on our instincts, and life quickly turns treacherous. True wisdom realizes that we must trust in the Lord completely! When we fall back on our understanding while refusing to consult the clear teaching of God or ignoring it, we are destined for failure.

As a follower of Christ, we call Jesus our Lord. We promise to seek His will in all we do, not our self-will, someone else's will, or the will of the popular opinion. Fearing the Lord when trying to live a life that matters eternally doesn't mean quaking in terror of God. Instead, it means being reverent toward Him and dependent on Him and trusting that the Holy One of Heaven knows all, loves us, and longs to help us navigate life. One reason we have spent a great deal of time the last couple of months talking about our relationship with God as Father, Son, and Spirit is to prepare us to hear the Scriptures calling us to trust Him and seek His guidance for our lives. That means we turn away from evil so the devil won't use that evil to distort our minds, weaken our faith, and lead us down paths of destruction. After all, the devil lies to us because he wants to separate us from our trust in God and eventually lead us down destructive paths. [1]

Let's see all that God has done to save us, bless us, and promise us His future. Let's turn away from evil so we can seek God's will in all we do!

[1] Of the devil, Jesus said that, "He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character, for he is a liar and the father of lies" — John 8:44. We see the condition of the man in Mark 5:1-20, who was possessed by many evil spirits known as Legion before Jesus drove away the satanic influence in his life. The devil wants to lead us down a similar path to destruction (Ephesians 6:12). The destruction may be either physical like the demon-possessed man or spiritual, when the devil may convince us that living a life of self-sacrifice like Jesus did (John 13:12-14; Philippians 2:3-8) isn't needed, so that we accept things that Jesus rejects but the world accepts (for example, Galatians 5:19-21; Romans 13:13).

Today's Prayer

Father, I love You. I know You love me and want what is in my eternal best interest. However, dear God, I have not always trusted You with all my heart. I have sometimes sought the advice and input of others who do not yield their will to You and disregard Your truth in Scripture. Please forgive me and cleanse me of my sin. Holy Spirit, work on my heart so that it yields to Your influence as You work to transform me to be more like Jesus. I yearn to have You, O God, make my paths straight and my character more Christlike. I yield my heart to You and offer myself to You, God, for You are the only true and living God, the Creator of everything, and the giver of every good and precious gift. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
