While there are warnings given to men in the book of Proverbs about the dangers and sinfulness of seeking sexual relationships with women outside of marriage, our verses for today point us in a more joyful direction. A godly, virtuous, capable, and trustworthy woman is worth more than any financial wealth or professional accomplishments a man might achieve. A godly wife is precious, and her husband must value her as precious. She is a gift from God who "will greatly enrich his life," bringing him good all the days of his life. He should love her, protect her, and value her. He must be willing to give up his life for her, support her desires to be holy, and care for her. [1] And, as precious partners in the sacred one-body intimacy of marriage, her husband should learn to please, fulfill, and bless her in their times of sexual intimacy. [2] In loving, mutually supportive marriages, the world can see how a genuine man of God should live, find joy in his wife, and build a home that demonstrates and passes on godliness and love as his legacy. [3]
Precious and almighty God, please bless those who are married with the joy, security, and intimacy You designed into marriage. May husbands find great joy in their wives, and may wives find great joy in their husbands. May their relationship be blessed with genuine love at every level of relationship — heart, soul, body, and mind. Father, at the same time, we pray Your blessing on those who are single. Please bless them with close friendships that are holy and honorable to you and fulfilling to them. Help them find great joy in You if their call from You is to be single. If that is not their call, please bless them with a marriage partner who is holy, kind, and faithful. We ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord. Amen.
