Dear brothers and sisters, honor those who are your leaders in the Lord's work. They work hard among you and give you spiritual guidance. Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other.

Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone.

See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people.

— 1 Thessalonians 5:12-15 NLT

Key Thought

After the first two hard years of COVID-19, church leaders resigned in droves from their roles as ministers, preachers, pastors, elders, and deacons. They were exhausted trying to serve, pastor, love, encourage, help through grief, and minister to a discouraged and sometimes grumpy group of Jesus' disciples. Some of these resignations were based on exhaustion. Far more resignations (in my experience of working with church leaders) were because these leaders and their families were exhausted AND discouraged because of the criticism, sniping, nitpicking, and hypercriticism from those they loved and served. Nothing they did was ever good enough. While they were all too aware of their own flaws, people pounced on those flaws and criticized them for their flaws while neglecting their many hours of selfless devotion to the work the of Lord. [1]

The New Testament is full of reminders that we should follow, love, respect, honor, and support our leaders who work hard for us and are people of holy character. As God's people, we must awaken to the reality that commercials and political rancor have trained us to be consumers who are constantly evaluating things by how they impact us. Unfortunately, when our first reaction to church leadership is based on how it impacts us personally, we have forgotten about our mission and character as God's people .

Today's verses on respecting and giving wholehearted love to our leaders are very clear and shouldn't need explanation. Instead, we need to practice these principles. So, rather than explain more, I want to simply share another passage on loving and following our leaders; we need to hear this message in all of its urgency:

Obey your spiritual leaders, and do what they say. Their work is to watch over your souls, and they are accountable to God. Give them reason to do this with joy and not with sorrow. That would certainly not be for your benefit. [2]
[1] Most of us are aware of several high profile scandals involving sexual misconduct or abuse, misogyny, and gross financial impropriety on the part of a few church leaders. However, most of God's leaders serve honorably and without pay because of their love for God's people. The abuses of some should be dealt with firmly and carefully, with support and loving concern for those who were abused. These leaders do not fit under the description of today's devotional thoughts; they need to be disciplined.
[2] Hebrews 13:17.

Today's Prayer

Almighty God, I am praying today for Your leaders, men and women who serve following the example of Jesus. They love Your people, sacrifice themselves to bless others, and seek to bring us to maturity in Christ. Please use me to honor and encourage my leaders in Your Kingdom. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, humble them gently while filling them with a genuine sense of Your presence and grace. I ask this in Jesus' mighty name. Amen.
