    Joe Newton has been head coach of New York Community High School for thirty five years, and nineteen times state champions, and amazingly with almost no individual standouts!

    Kids want what everybody wants: a chance to succeed, recognition, being a part of something that matters. And what kids also need is structure in their lives, which means rules to follow. And Joe Newton has them. Two missed practices without an excuse means expulsion. Get caught smoking—even once—and you are gone.

    But he also recognizes every individual—gifted or not—with rewards and medals. Even the Captain of the team goes to all of the guys, not just those who have the best times.
